Which seed should I choose?

If you need a hard wearing lawn then choose a mixture with ryegrass in it. Modern lawn ryegrasses are quite fine leaved and wear tolerant.

For an ornamental lawn choose fine fescue bent mixtures.

What is the best time to sow the grass seed?

The best time is when the soil is warm and rain is expected usually mid March or September. You can seed in summer but must be prepared to water regularly.

How long will it take to grow?

If it’s a ryegrass mixture the seed will germinate within seven days. Fescue mixtures can take up to three weeks to fully germinate.

Should I use seed or turf?

Turf is a good option for instant cover. Seed gives you more choice of exactly which grasses you require in your lawn and is much less costly.

How much seed do I need to buy?

Work on an average of 35 g/m² (about an ounce per square yard).

When do I first mow the lawn and what height should I mow it at?

Let the grasses grow to about two inches high and remove about a third of the growth each time.

Keep ryegrass lawns at about ¾” to 1”. Fescue lawns can be mown lower even as low as 3/16”.

Make sure you have a mower with sharp effective blades.

For very low mowing use a quality cylinder mower.

Should I apply a fertiliser to the seedbed prior to sowing the seed?

Yes a balance fertiliser should be used e.g. 7n 7K 7P.

This gives the young plants an excellent start.

Why should I buy from the Johnsons seed range?

Johnsons use especially bred grasses specifically for quality lawns .These are fine leaved and clean cutting. Cheap seed mixtures are a false economy as you end up with a coarse open lawn.

Will birds eat all the seed when I sow it?

Birds take small amounts of seed and can be a nuisance so use some netting over the area until the seed has germinated.

Do I have to rake the seed after it has been sown?

Yes, rake the area gently to even out the surface and just cover the seed.

Are small stones a problem in the seed bed?

Very small stones are not a problem - a good rake will remove most of them.
